A vital north-south artery connecting highways 148 and 366 linking the municipalities of Pontiac and La Peche was closed down last Friday after a sinkhole opened up on the north-bound lane of chemin Eardley-Masham.

The sinkhole, less than a meter in diameter and around 3 feet deep, is located between du Camp Gatineau and Sincennes roads near a recently replaced culvert.  While the road surrounding the crater appears to be solid, there is a high volume of water draining through the culvert which could make the road unstable for traffic.

The duration of the closure is listed as indeterminate as of 11pm last night as posted on Québec511.info.  TMDETQ Spokesperson Isabelle Gagné has told Pontiac2020.ca that the highway was closed immediately after the cavity was discovered on April 15th.  Engineers are still assessing the damage and are determining the best course of action to repair and reopen the road

In the meantime, motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternate routes on highways 303 at Centre street in Shawville, or highway 5 via Chelsea.
