A serious single-vehicle roll-over was caused early morning on December 4 by a deep slick of some kind of waste matter spilled on Highway 148 near Parker Road in Luskville. Pools of what appeared to be septic waste or liquid animal manure were at least two or three meters in length and possibly 4 cm in depth, according to witnesses.

The black, oily, foul-smelling puddles were in the west-bound lane of the highway from near the Recreation Park to opposite Nugents' Trucking, where the accident occurred. Smaller piles of drier material were found scattered across the road for kilometers towards Quyon.

Even hours later, the waste material was still extremely slippery and smelly.

A blue mini-van traveling west lost control and rolled over into the ditch just after 7 a.m. The lone occupant, deeply shaken, was attended to by a member of the municipal fire department who, by complete coincidence, happened to be the first on the scene. He was later transported to hospital by ambulance. The vehicle was completely destroyed.

The scene of the accident.

Workers from the Ministère de Transport (MTQ) were subsequently called to the site: Robert Erwin Transport, that has the contract for snow removal on this stretch of the road, was ordered to use a snow plow to push the matter to the site of the road and put down a layer of sand to improve traction and absorb the moisture. The greasy grey material is still quite obvious in the right-hand lane heading west, even after a solid day of rain on Tuesday.

Denis Levasseur, Gatineau's chief of operations for the MTQ, told Pontiac 2020.ca that the ministry had tried to locate the truck that had spilled the waste but without success. While acknowledging that any unsecured load contravenes the Highway Safety Code, Levasseur said that the ministry would not continue to seek the transgressor nor to enforce charges, adding that this was now a matter for the police.

Pontiac2020.ca in is communication with the MRC des Collines police. When the police report on the accident is produced, this story will be updated.
