Everyone understands austerity: paring back luxuries and comforts to the bare essentials in order to make it through hard financial times.

But what does it mean when essential services that help some of our most vulnerable population must endure reduced funding?

The construction of the extension to Notre Dame de la Joie elementary school in Luskville is coming along very nicely. The structure for the top story is complete and materials for the walls, windows and roof are being delivered. I hope there will be a grand opening. I love a good ribbon-cutting, as quite a lot of you know.

Kimberly Kraft is selling First Nations-themed crafts, herb planters and jewelry at her stall outside Depanneur Pontiac, at the intersection with Hwy. 148 and Ch. Curley/ Eardley-Masham Road this summer.

Kraft created the planters and some of the crafts herself, including these unusual feather head dresses made with safety pins.

We frequently hear about lives saved by organs from deceased donors, but far less about a quiet but remarkable group: live donors.

Sometimes you just wish so hard for a magic wand --- and a magic carpet --- to rush to a place to do a thing. If I had those two objects, I would rush to Appawatiskat with hundreds of canvasses, a million brushes and enough paint to fill a swimming-pool. I would magic up a tent and hold 24-hour painting workshops for ever. Art is not the answer to everything but it's a huge step towards understanding and coping with almost anything. Art can soothe your broken heart. Good luck and much love, Appawatiskat. Don't give up. I am praying hard for you.

For some time, there has been a plastic tray of old books on a shelf under the Lotto table, just to the left of the coffee machine at the Luskville Depanneur, number 3000 on Hwy. 148.

I've taken one or two novels from it myself in the past. But now, with the gracious permission of proprietor Elaine Goulet, that tray of books is now a Little Free Library (LFL).
