Calling the MoP: come to the Terry Fox Run

Sunday 17, 2017.

When I was a know-nothing student in Australia, we were shown the Terry Fox T.V. movie (The Terry Fox Story, 1983) for religion class....

As I knew nothing about almost anything at the time, I didn't even understand it was all true.

Now I know a few more things and now Terry Fox is and will always be my true hero.

Shellback safety: please look out for turtles

It's the height of summer and turtles are getting all maternal. The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) are raising awareness of these beautiful creatures' seasonal need to crawl around on the side of the road -- and occasionally lurch their way across it -- with their Carapace initiative. Visit carapace.ca to learn about how to report the sighting of a turtle - live or dead -- along the highway. The NCC uses this information to identify what kind of turtles live in the area and to plan ways to protect them. Pick up a sticker at your local depanneur and help educate your friends and neighbours.

The State of Kate: Appawatiskat's broken heart

Categories:

Sometimes you just wish so hard for a magic wand --- and a magic carpet --- to rush to a place to do a thing. If I had those two objects, I would rush to Appawatiskat with hundreds of canvasses, a million brushes and enough paint to fill a swimming-pool. I would magic up a tent and hold 24-hour painting workshops for ever. Art is not the answer to everything but it's a huge step towards understanding and coping with almost anything. Art can soothe your broken heart. Good luck and much love, Appawatiskat. Don't give up. I am praying hard for you.

“Big Organic”: Threat or Opportunity?

Categories:

Rob Wallbridge

I’m proud of the growth in the organic sector. According to the Organic Trade Association, organic sales in the United States have increased from $3.6 billion in  1997 to over $39 billion in 2014. This double-digit rate of growth holds true for Canada, too, which is now the fourth-largest organic market in the world.

The Unintended Consequences of Proportional Representation

Categories:

Jonathan Crowe

Now that the election is over, many disappointed Canadians are talking about proportional representation, and how much fairer it would have been than our first-past-the-post electoral system.

I have never been a fan of proportional representation, partly because I think its supporters are mostly unhappy with the results of the most recent election and want to re-run it under different rules that they think are more favourable to their side, and partly because I’m a big fan of holding members of Parliament accountable to a constituency. But also because I’ve seen how PR systems operate in other countries. Not in the intricate, technical, here’s-how-it-works terms that PR advocates like geeking over — the real-world effects. And some of those real-world effects are precisely the opposite of what PR advocates want.

The story of the Ottawa River: Priceless and precarious

"Every day on this river is an adventure.” Judith Flynn-Bedard is speaking from the stern of Pier Pressure II, the small cabin cruiser she owns with her husband, Robert, and she shakes her head at a string of memories.

There was the day a sleek boat with a menacing tiger chained to the deck pulled into the marina. There was the dawn she was awakened by a yacht full of drunks pulling in after a night of wild partying with hired strippers. There was the time she found a frogman checking the hull of her boat – in preparation for the day George W. Bush descended from the sky in the presidential helicopter on a 2007 visit.

Where have Canada’s young farmers gone?

Categories:

Ralph C. Martin, PhD, P.Ag
Guelph Mercury

The Statistics Canada 2011 Census of Agriculture shows that farm youth are still leaving their farms. About 20 years ago, almost 20 per cent of farmers were under 35 and by 2006, less than 10 per cent of farmers qualified for this distinction. In 2011, only 8.2 per cent of farmers were in this energetic age category of enhanced mental acuity and physical stamina.

Let’s be clear that we’re not only talking about fewer farmers as farms increase in size. The point to emphasize is that as the overall population of farmers declines, young farmers are disappearing even faster.

Soaring farmland prices a crisis in the making: Don Pittis

Don Pittis
CBC News | Canada

If you knew there was a very safe Canadian investment that skyrocketed by 20 per cent last year, you'd probably say that was a good thing.

But when the thing that's going up in value is farmland, Christie Young says it's a crisis in the making.

The latest survey by Farm Credit Canada shows the price of farmland in Quebec rose by a staggering 19.4 per cent last year. Nationally, Canadian farmland from coast to coast has risen by an average of 12 per cent a year since 2008. That's more than five times the rate of inflation.

Vers une hausse des frais de croissance

Categories:

From vivid landscapes to vibrant history, the wild west springs alive in southern Alberta

“Did you know that the Sundance Kid worked here at Bar U Ranch?” While driving a team of black Percheron horses around the National Historic Site, an hour-and-a-half south of Calgary, Dan Wilson regaled a wagonload of visitors with stories. “Whenever the Northwest Mounted Police would drop by, The Kid would disappear, saying something about a fence to fix.”

At the turn of the last century, Bar U was internationally renowned for its purebred Percheron draft horses and cattle. Today, the sprawling ranch commemorates the heritage of the Canadian ranching industry.

No, heights don’t bother me or my husband Eric Fletcher, so off we went, climbing more than 720 metres to reach this windswept, talus ridge—on horseback! We were in Waterton Lakes National Park, located four hours south of Calgary, in Alberta.
