Evénements dans la municipalité de Pontiac - Events in the Municipality of Pontiac
Approximately 15 people gathered at the Luskville Community Centre on April 29th to take part in a public consultation meeting regarding the future Domaine des Chutes subdivision.
Small stuff for us, big stuff for them. The Ottawa Presbytery of the United Church of Canada is seeking supplies and household goods and materials to send to the northern reserve of Attawapiskat, and I am sure I don't need to remind you how desperate and bleak things are up there.
A list of requested items, compiled by leaders and teachers from the community, is reproduced here. Those with an asterisk (*) are those which are especially needed.
Items can be new or gently used.
Twenty teams took part in a three-day fundraising ball tournament at the Luskville Recreation Park on April 22, 23 and 24.
Made up of players from across the region who use the ball fields thoughout the playing season, the event was created to help the Municipality of Pontiac maintain and improve the park.
"There was an entry fee to participate and we are selling food and drinks today," explained one of the organizers of the tournament, Dave Hickey. "After paying expenses, the profit from the event goes straight to the park.'
So ask yourself: do you feel ducky? Well, do you?
If so, find yourself a member of the Quyon Lionettes who can sell you a ticket for the annual Duck Race, to be held on June 5th.
One thousand ducks will be launched in spectacular style from a front-end loader off the Egan Street bridge at 2 p.m. and the winner named at the Clarendon Street bridge approximately 30 or so minutes later, depending on water levels. There will also be a fun day event at the soccer field, according to Lionette Joan Belsher.
Wakefield Earth Day has an interesting program this year for those interested in green development. It takes place Friday, April 23rd and Saturday, April 24th at Wakefield Centre, 38 chemin de la Vallée de Wakefield.
Some highlights (courtesy of Mari Wesche):
Friday, April 23:
5:30 - 7 p.m. - Discussion of green development in Wakefield South by C. Minnes and architect D. Cardinal
7 - 9 p.m. - WIFF screening of Avi Lewis' (+ Naomi Klein's) film, This Changes Everything, plus discussion with local green entrepreneurs. (Tickets available on-line, $10)
Saturday, April 23:
As the snow finally recedes and grass - however ragged and dry - reappears, we rejoice... until we catch a glimpse of the state of the ditches and roadsides of Pontiac.
This is what it currently looks like near my house.
Bottles, cans, Tim Hortons cups and fast food packaging lie in heavy drifts amongst the weeds and gravel. And there's worse.... torn-up truck tires, broken glass, construction debris: it's an environmental disaster in miniature out there.
