They say it takes a village to raise a child and the Parents de la Municipalite de Pontiac (PMP) are determined to create and support that village. The group, backed by a number of provincially-funded groups as well as other local community partners, held their first Annual General Meeting on August 4 at the Community Centre in Luskville.

Launched mid-June in 2015, the PMP's activities have included dancing lessons, workshops on body image and healthy eating, as well as a story-telling hour and a picnic event. PMP organizers estimate at least 40 to 50 families have been part of this years activities.

Last week, a series of large, gray boulders were placed along the perimeter of the road leading up the east side of the Luskville Recreation Park in an effort to keep cars in the parking lot and off the grass. A double row of boulders was also added on both sides of the driveway that enters the park directly from the Hwy. 148 across a small causeway.

Everyone understands austerity: paring back luxuries and comforts to the bare essentials in order to make it through hard financial times.

But what does it mean when essential services that help some of our most vulnerable population must endure reduced funding?

Since it's inception, the Pontiac Pacific Junction (PPJ) trail was a place bikes and hikers could travel with no fear of meeting another kind of vehicle, not even a horse. But now a group of Quad Clubs are asking for that to change.

According to Jasmine Leduc, media spokesperson for the National Capital Commission, the Luskville Falls trail will close again for three months this summer. Although many improvements to the car park, picnic area and trail were completed both last year and this spring, work still remains to be undertaken on the trail itself.

I ducked under the locked gate and walked to the Luskville Falls trailhead the other day, before the Return Of The Snow. The new gravel in the car park is lovely and deep and, although there are barriers at the stop of the first step of steps going downhill, they are pushed to one side.

The access to the Luskville Falls is currently blocked for renovations to the picnic area, the car park, the climbing trail and the access road itself. According to the sign, these areas are actually closed to the public. However the day I was there, several cars were parked along Ch. Hotel de Ville: I assume the people had walked along the road to the falls regardless. In a related topic, the sound of water on rock right now sounds like a passing train.

*UPDATE: I called the NCC today -- third number lucky! -- and have this update. The rehabilitation of the trail is almost complete and  . . .

Pontiacs on the Warpath to Renfrew and Arnprior

After slipping into 4th place in the standings, the Pontiacs spectacularly re-tooled and locked the pieces together and have had an impressive string of wins as they battle their way back to 3rd place.  Still two games behind from scheduling changes, Vegas is poised to close the gap as they play the missing contests and catch up.

The Pontiac Juniors are back home today to take on the Gatineau Mustangs after a hard-fought heartbreaker Friday night in Perth in an explosive game against a hard-hitting Blue Wings.  Vegas now slides down to fourth place in the Valley division standings.

Today's game will be at 3PM at home in Shawville between the sole two Québec teams in the EOJHL.  The Mustangs are currently in 2nd place just slightly behind first place Ottawa West in the Metro division standings.  This interdivisional match will be crucial for both teams, since it could help notch Gatineau into 1st place or help the Pontiacs climb back up to number three.

Vegas on the Road Tonight in Perth

The Shawville Pontiacs will be hitting the road this evening to take on the Blue Wings for their second match after shutting out Perth 8-to-0 on October 12th in the first match between the clubs this season.

The 6th place Blue Wings are coming off a 13 game losing streak after getting their first win against the Ottawa Junior Canadians Tuesday and will be surely looking to avenge their humiliating defeat at the hands of Vegas.

The Pontiacs however will need this win to break the trend of their three previous losses to solidify their place at number three in the EOJHL Valley division standings.

Game time is 7:30 at the Perth and District Community Center.

SHAWVILLE — The Pontiacs are back home this Friday, October 31st, to host Arnprior in their second game this season against the Packers.

Looking to reverse the trend of their previous two road game losses last weekend, Shawville will be primed for the win.  They remain squarely positioned in 3rd place in the Valley Division standings, while their top performers continue to deliver on the ice.

Friday evening's game will start at 8pm at the Community Centre at the corner of Campbell and Lang streets in Shawville.

Vegas on the Road this Weekend for a Double Tilt

Categories:

The Shawville Pontiac Juniors will be on the road this weekend for two important games as they continue to battle their way up the Valley division standings.

Saturday's game, in Almonte at 7:30pm, will pit the Pontiacs against the Thunder on the heels of last week's grinder that had to be decided by a shootout.  With Vegas taking the match, the Thunder will be looking for some payback after last weeks game pushed them further down in the standings and Almonte will be looking to close the gap between themselves in 4th place and Shawville, firmly nested in third.

Then Vegas will be off to Renfrew, to take on their main rivals, the Division's first place Renfrew Timberwolves at 7:30pm Sunday evening.  Whenever these two teams hit the sheet, sparks are bound to fly, resulting in some of the best hockey available anywhere.
