Eva Baldi of Beechgrove is only 16 years-old but her eyes are already fixed on the bright stage lights of the future. The grade 10 student recently performed a major role in the Broadway musical play In the Heights at Philemon Wright High School (PWHS) in Hull. Written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the story is set in a Hispanic community in New York City that is facing familial change and economic challenges. Eva played the role of Camilla Rosario.

Deer danger and how to contact the MTQ

Trouble in Paradise

I live on the highway in Luskville between Parker Rd. and Nugent Rd. which is Deer Death Central at this time of the year. A few years ago, I rang the Ministere de Transport Quebec (MTQ) and after being transferred six times (I'm not joking), we had extra "deer crossing" signs installed here and there.

Rip, zip and away: Rebecca's Horse Blanket Repair at your service

As all horse-owners well know, to their constant dismay, it takes a determined quadruped a mere moment to pull a buckle off a winter blanket or to completely tear a flysheet apart in the back paddock.

Equine equipment is too expensive to keep replacing, but luckily help is at hand from Rebecca Leblanc, pictured here with Indy, wearing a custom-made neck-piece for the Lope for Hope event last week.

Too big

You are, no doubt, starting to get the idea that I have a 'thing' about fire.

Crazy thing, you see, is this:

During summer - although the grass is sometimes thick and green and the sky is sometimes cool and cloudy - things can seriously burn down anyway. These bonfire flames [seen last week at a lovely local home] were stretching at least 25 feet into the air, all within a spark's access of many tremendously flammable ditches and fields.

Pulling over to see if someone was in danger, I could actually hear the relaxed and appreciative chatter of people sitting happily while they watched. I could also feel the awful heat of the blaze though my car window... from the road, which was at least 20 feet away.

PLEASE please please be careful about what you set fire to until we have an inch of cold, deadening frost. Big thanks.

Spring time means gardeners are busy planting, planning and pruning … and the employees of Pontiac Hops, based in Luskville, are no exception.

The business, owned by James and Anthony Nugent, is in its third year of operation and is currently preparing to add a new three-acre field to the farm. The first year the pair put in 3,000 plants; now the count is close to 8,700.

If there's ever been a true symbol of spring, it's the newly-born lamb and the newly-hatched chick. Ferme JAE Farm in Beechgrove, halfway between Luskville and Quyon, currently has plenty of both.

New lambs are arriving on schedule for the flock of North Country Cheviot x Suffolk and Rideau Arcott sheep owned by Andrea Goffart and Jozsef Veres.

UPDATE: Highway 148 Detour Progress

Categories:

by:

Thomas Soulière

Luskville Sector — Ministry of Transport Québec officials are hopeful that the bypass road being built alongside the washed-out portion of Highway 148 will be ready to go into service later this afternoon, relieving local residents and visitors to the Municipality of Pontiac from the one-and-a-half hour plus detour in effect since Tuesday afternoon.

The bypass lane will accommodate one lane of traffic at a time, alternating directions by way of temporary traffic lights that will be put in place on each end of the newly created bypass lane.

Mayor Roger Larose and Pontiac’s MNA André Fortin were both onsite monitoring the MTQ’s progress and speaking to concerned citizens.

The Ministry of Transport Québec officials advise motorists to monitor the MTQ website for the exact time of the bypass lane opening.

Again with a Sinkhole on the 148

Categories:

Jonathan Crowe

In June 2011, heavy rains washed out a portion of Route 148 between Luskville and Quyon, forcing traffic to detour along narrow gravel roads for more than two months. At the time I noted that had the washout occured east of Parker Road rather than west of it, no detour would have been possible: westbound traffic would have had to double back to Gatineau, and eastbound traffic would have had to take the Eardley-Masham Road or the Quyon Ferry.
