Being able to pinch his thumb and finger would give Nugent the ability to do things like cut a steak, pull up a zipper and hold a glass without spilling. “Being able to grasp things would be a big deal,” he says. “Right now, I use my teeth to open a bottle cap.”

The End of the Shawville Pontiacs

Categories:

To the Pontiac Juniors supporters and fans:  listen; the upcoming 2014-2015 Season may very well be the end of Junior B Hockey in Shawville. The team doesn’t want to go quietly into the night and their fate will rest in YOUR hands.

Team President Ryan Barber has been with the Juniors for three seasons, and this year there is a challenge forming between the Pontiac Juniors and the Eastern Ontario Junior Hockey League (EOJHL).

Ryan and the Shawville team are on a mission of raising awareness, because plans are in the works where the EOJHL will no longer exist in the 2015-2016 Season. This is a league where the Pontiac Juniors have been a part of it for 29 years. This is a league that has been around since 1966 and is one of the biggest in Canada.

In last weekend’s matches, Vegas out-scored the visiting teams 15-9 with Mathew Labrosse adding four more goals to his season tally along with Guillaume Coovi-Sirois and Captain Julian Dumont each adding three, both hat tricks.  The 3-game set was book-ended with two barn-burners in which . . .

SHAWVILLE – Coming off a loss in January 12th’s Sunday matinee game against the Mustangs when Gatineau took advantage of the Pontiacs penalties in the second period to put a solid gap in the score, Vegas was back at home Friday night to host the Renfrew Timberwolves in a bid to add some points towards a playoff spot in the EOJHL season finals.

In a wild and fast-paced game which had a little bit of everything, the Valley Division 1st place Timberwolves practically chewed through everything in site eking out a victory against a determined and tight Shawville as both teams traded possession of the puck while tearing up the ice.  Renfrew’s assortment of husky players managed to lean the play towards the Shawville end of the rink at times, but the Pontiacs gave as generously as they received, masterfully capitalizing on every opportunity presented to them.  The puck rarely got flung down the length of the ice as both teams kept tight control over the biscuit when they had it in their possession, with Vegas making some beautiful technical plays and exhibiting some impressive stick work.  Despite an excellent effort by the Pontiacs, the Timberwolves managed to leverage their net-rushing strategy in overtime to score the winning goal; scoring the last goal of the game pretty much they way they did the first.

The grinding got off to an early start when the Shawville Pontiacs hit the ice last night in Arnprior to face off against the Valley Division second place Packers at the Nick Smith Arena on a mission to keep their winning streak rolling.  The Pontiacs have been consistently out-shooting their opponents lately, and last nights game was no exception, making 38 shots to the Packers 36.  Vegas’ Great Barrier of Boisvert was in fine form and was a mere one save away from shutting Arnprior out.

While each period didn’t see a lot of action on the scoreboard, there was full drama on the ice as the Packers needed the win to close the gap between them and the division first place Renfrew Timberwolves.  Shawville on the other hand was intent on keeping its wins in the plus column and intended to cede no ground to Arnprior.  In response the Packers got pushy and . . .

GATINEAU — The Shawville Pontiacs made it three wins in a row last Friday night when they visited Buckingham in a rough back and forth high-stakes match that Vegas was determined to win.  The pugnacious Mustangs’ frenzied stampede wasn't enough to trample Shawville’s resolve for victory and despite a brief turn around in the middle of the third for Gatineau, the Pontiacs took back control in the last part of the period widening the gap in the score before herding the delirious Mustangs back into the stockade.

The Pontiacs got down to business early taking the game’s first point when Isak Savard...

Shawville Pontiacs End Year With Impressive Win

The Pontiac Juniors last game of 2013 was a picture perfect clean win for Vegas as Shawville won over the Valley Division third ranked Perth Blue Wings, retaking their perch in fourth place and sending the Stittsville Royals traveling gong-show back to their dutiful position as the cellar-dwellers of the division.

The last time both teams met was back in October in a bittersweet match that saw some fine hockey and a game so tightly contested – that after an overtime round was insufficient to crown a winner – a shoot-out was required to settle the score.  Shawville won that night with 2 shoot-out goals giving them the tie-breaking point, but it was also the night that Brett Nugent was hurt and many lives were forever changed.

Following the cancellation of their last two home games – courtesy of an avalanche of snow that walloped the region during the past couple of weeks – the Pontiac Juniors finally got the chance to hit the ice last night against the Royals in Stittsville.  Looking to climb back up in EOJHL standings, Vegas was in no mood to be denied a victory by the puffy Royals, in this the fourth time both teams butted heads in the 2013-14 season.

And butt heads is what they indeed did do.  You can really feel the love when these two teams get together...
