Thanks to the generosty of the Municipality of Pontiac, four art classes are being offered to our community, absolutely free of charge. Details of the classes can be found in your fall activities bulletin, delivered in your mail box last week. Pontiac2020.ca interviewed the four teachers to find out more about the classes and the artists.
The first class offered is decorating canvas place mats with Katharine Fletcher on October 13 at the Bert Kennedy Centre (the Womens Institute) opposite Onslow Elementary on Clarendon Street in Quyon.
Katharine Fletcher, Get Art teacher.
Pontiac 2020.ca: How did you learn the kind of art you will teach in Quyon?
Katharine Fletcher: I love printing so when I learned how to make stamps at a West Carleton Arts Society event this summer, I realized I could use my skills for a Get Art class. I'm always looking for and open to new ideas and experimentation so I married the printing idea with making one's very own tablemats! The oval canvas mats have been prepared with a coat of gesso, then we add a thin layer of paint and while that is drying, make our own stamps. Once the surface is ready, we put a thin layer of paint on the stamp and print the design. I taught this class at Norway Bay this summer, and it proved really popular with both kids and parents.
P2020: What will students take home from your class?
KF: Students will take home the re-usable stamps they made, plus the completed placemat and also a coaster.
A selection of student work from previous classes.
P2020: Why do you love teaching art?
KF: Art offers a type of therapy, a creative break from our regular day. Art fires up a different part of our brain, allowing us to explore, experiment and enjoy the act of making something unique. I love seeing workshop participants get inspired and get into their art project and I love being with people, talking about/living/breathing art. It's fun and a non-judgemental way to open ourselves up to curiosity and experimentation. Finally, I am dedicated to community: I love the Pontiac dearly and it's always been my goal to contribute to wellness, positive projects and compassionate support for people who'd like to try something new but are not sure of how to go about it. It's wonderful to help bring creativity to the Pontiac.
Get Art classes are suitable for adults or children. However, children under 10 need to ask their adult to stay and help.
