September brings many things, among them cooler weather, fall fairs and the Terry Fox Run.
Regional coordinater John Petty is once again chasing the elusive goal of having 200 participants at this years run on Sunday, September 16.
Petty, along with his late wife Betty and legendary friend Rick Valin, has been facilitating the run practically since there was one.
"Around the time Terry was doing his Marathon of Hope, I was doing a lot of eulogies for (cancer-related) deaths in Betty's family," recalls Petty. "She and Rick and I wanted to do something. There was this feeling of frustration; we wanted to make a difference."
Fox, who would have turned 60 this year, became a hero to Petty.
"Terry's image was on the news and thousands of people identified with this humble guy with a disability and a goal," said Petty. "We are still trying to bridge the gap and sometimes it's difficult but the memory of friends like David Holmes keep you going; carrying on the Terry Fox Run and doing the best we can do."
The Terry Fox Run starts from the PHS parking lot on Maple Street in Shawville on September 16.
Registration at 1 pm. Event starts at 2 pm.
A new loop along the PPJ has been added for cyclists.
You do not need to run, you do not need to do 10 km. You just need to turn up, bring some money and help Mr. Petty get his 200 people.
Thank you so much.
