Packers Plan Payback on Pontiac

The Pontiac Juniors are back at home tonight to host Arnprior as the Packers look to pay back ShawVegas for the near shut-out they suffered at the hands of the Pontiacs the last time both teams met on November 3rd.  Mathew Labrosse set the tone for the game early at 1:51 mark with Shawville’s first goal with help from Coovi-Sirois and Vezina, as the Pontiacs stopped any attempt by Arnprior to get real-estate on the scoreboard for the entire first period.

Playing a very strong game, Liam Poirier started off the second period in the tradition set by Labrosse in the first by slamming home the biscuit special-delivery making the score 2-0 for Shawville just 2:40 into the start of the 2nd period.  The Packers got the advantage when Pontiacs Julian Dumont was tossed into the sin bin after...

LUSKVILLE — A slightly larger than usual crowd were in attendance for the first meeting of the 9th Municipal Council’s first meeting held in Luskville, Tuesday November 19, 2013 at the Community Centre.  Since the regularly scheduled meeting planned for November 12th had been postponed, this meeting fell under the category of a Special Meeting and took place under the rules governing such cases.

The meeting began with each member of the new Council being sworn in by Director General Sylvain Bertrand, and Assistant DG Benedikt Kuhn.  The meeting then proceeded as normal and Council got down to the business at hand.

The item on the agenda which seemed to be of the most interest to those in attendance was a motion to end the procedure of adoption and coming into force of the urban planning Bylaws voted on at a special meeting of the outgoing Council on October 1st, just prior to the election.  Following a contentious public consultation,..

Jets Roll Out Matinée Gong Show in Metcalfe

There’s no denying that the Shawville Pontiacs are a hard working team.  Last week’s grueling schedule saw “ShawVegas” travel to West Ottawa to take on the Golden Knights, followed by a home game crowd-pleaser in the Shaw when the Pontiacs delivered a decisive victory against the Stittsville Royals, on the eve of Sunday afternoon’s appearance in Metcalfe to take on the Jets.

Playing all that hockey in between running equipment drives and fundraisers means the Pontiacs are a busy organization.  Last Fridays “Fill the Rink for Brent” fundraiser hosted in Perth by the Blue Wings brought in $18,111, which was matched dollar for dollar by the Wings.  Add to that another $12,500 from website donations and the total for the night was an impressive $48,722!

5 trouble spots on Ottawa-area highways

Categories:

There were six fatal crashes from 2001 to 2010 in a 10 km stretch from Luskville to the River bridge in Quyon, and another three in 2011 that killed seven people. Notable among these has a four-vehicle collision in December 2011 that killed a father and his four-year-old son, as well as the driver of the other vehicle, who police said had crossed the centre line at a curve in the road and crashed head-on with the other vehicle. It was also in 2011 near Luskville that two people were killed when a car struck a bear on a rural Quebec highway and sent the animal crashing into a second vehicle.

Language wars: Quebec unions share ‘horror stories’ of civil servants who used bilingualism to help citizens

MONTREAL — As hearings began Tuesday into Quebec’s proposed tightening of its language law, the main union representing provincial civil servants had some horror stories to share about life on the frontlines.

The details were so shocking that employees’ names and workplaces were withheld to protect them from possible repercussions, the Syndicat de la fonction publique et parapublique du Québec (SFPQ) wrote in a brief tabled at the National Assembly.

There was the perfectly bilingual clerk at Revenue Quebec who frequently meets people who are more at ease discussing their tax questions in English. The clerk prefers to go along rather than turn “a tax problem into a language debate” and possibly spark a complaint.

Stittsville Royals take lesson from Shawville Pontiacs

Undaunted by Thursdays upset in Ottawa, the Pontiacs left their dressing room amid a trail of empty Wheaties boxes and proceeded to open a can of something very different on the Royals during Stittsville’s 1st period Goalie Parade last night at the Shawville Arena.

Just 54 seconds shy of the 4 minute mark on the game clock Shawville's Alexandre Larocque with assists from Liam Poirier and Julian Dumont put the Pontiacs first marker on the scoreboard.  Only 4 shots later in 3 short minutes Larocque, again assisted by Poirier, delivered the biscuit past Stittsville’s sieve giving Shawville a 2-all lead.

It didn’t take much longer until Gilmour Maurice...

The Pontiacs are returning home tonight to face off against the Stittsville Royals in Shawville at 8pm after coming away from a 5-3 upset against the Golden Knights last night at the Barbara Ann Scott Arena in Ottawa.

Ottawa West took an early lead ten seconds into the game in what quickly became a back and forth battle.  Shawville came back when Danick Genest drove home a rebound from Matt Labrosse, but the Knights quickly retook the lead adding 2 goals to finish off the 1st period up 3-1 over the Pontiacs.

The 2nd period continued unchanged until Matt Labrosse,...

Explore some of the Ottawa region's fine wineries

It's hard to think of a more pleasant outing than a drive in the countryside around Ottawa to do a little wine tasting. This is a good time of year for it, with the leaves turning to a blaze of colour and the winemakers busy. If we don't already think of this as a winemaking region, it's about time we did. Here are five places to sample our regional wines.

1. LAVENDER RIDGE FARM, LUSKVILLE, QUE.

Why it's worth the visit: What a combination - wine and lavender. Doug Briden and Joanne Labadie have been harvesting grapes and growing lavender on their family farm in West Quebec since 2006.

The Pathless Wood: Luskville Falls

The Luskville Falls trail leads up to the top of the Eardley Escarpment, which contains the richest and most fragile ecosystem in Gatineau Park. The Escarpment forms the dividing line between the rock of the Canadian Shield and the St. Lawrence Lowlands. It rises 270 metres from the floor of the Ottawa Valley and extends more than 30 kilometres. The waterfall is only a short hike from the parking lot, and is most spectacular in the spring when runoff from the melting snow increases the volume of water cascading down the face of the escarpment...

The Grace of Stones: Dancing on a Rock Face in Luskville, Quebec

Categories:

Our group consists of six rock climbers, ranging in skill from novices to experienced lead climbers.  We are located some 30km northwest of Ottawa, in an area called Luskville. It is a community of a few dwellings, a gas station and a shabby mini-mall, all dispersed along Highway 148 amidst grassy fields and rolling hills of the Ottawa valley.  Luskville is well-known among Ottawa’s climbers.  The area houses a few fine climbing spots frequented by sport and lead climbers as well as free soloists and occasional hikers. Just like obscure labels of Luskville’s climbing routes– “Death by Maboola,” “Ethics Police” or “Your Wife” – the names of climbing sections are somewhat baffling, at times explicable, and often an inside joke.  Today, we are headed to the “Eastern Block” and “DownUnder.”

The Legend of "The Shawville Express"

I was born in Ottawa in 1925, the eldest child of Maye Horner and Frank Finnigan, both then aged twenty-four. The year before, my father, known then throughout the Ottawa Valley hockey circuit and later throughout the hockey world as "The Shawville Express," had signed his first National Hockey League contract for $1,800 per season with the Ottawa Senators. Bonuses from Frank Ahearn, owner of the Senators, brought my father's salary for that first year up to $3,400...
