Five metal 44-gallon drums, discovered dumped at the end of Ch. Therien in Luskville weeks ago, are still in place.

Update: On April 12, Jasmine Leduc, strategic communications advisor with the NCC, updated Pontiac2020 on the situation. NCC conservation officers have now visited the site to ascertain whether the barrels are in a suitable state to be removed, which they are.

The officers then worked to identify the contents, finding solvents, paint, oil and resins. Further investigation is needed to determine the specific type of resin, after which the barrels will be removed, at latest by the end of next week.

According to Jasmine Leduc, media spokesperson for the National Capital Commission, the Luskville Falls trail will close again for three months this summer. Although many improvements to the car park, picnic area and trail were completed both last year and this spring, work still remains to be undertaken on the trail itself.

New Little Free Library: books are worth a look

For some time, there has been a plastic tray of old books on a shelf under the Lotto table, just to the left of the coffee machine at the Luskville Depanneur, number 3000 on Hwy. 148.

I've taken one or two novels from it myself in the past. But now, with the gracious permission of proprietor Elaine Goulet, that tray of books is now a Little Free Library (LFL).

NCC falls trail improvements close to completion

I ducked under the locked gate and walked to the Luskville Falls trailhead the other day, before the Return Of The Snow. The new gravel in the car park is lovely and deep and, although there are barriers at the stop of the first step of steps going downhill, they are pushed to one side.

Two major on-going road repairs will make getting in and out of the Municiplaity of Pontiac a little slower over the next few months, according to Alain Bourgeois, Director of Infrastructures and Public Works.

Firstly, work on the Mountain Road will continue as soon as the 'half-load' period has passed and heavy trucks can travel again.

The State of Kate: To the EC, with love...

I don't know what you do when you listen to radio reports on the situation in Syria and the resulting refugee flood assaulting southern Europe.

Personally, I cry... which probably means I should stop listening to CBC in the car.

Just over the mountain in Wakefield, incredible things are happening: money is flowing into bank accounts and houses are being rented. Volunteers are forming committees and signing their names to forms to sponsor refugee families into the community.

This Omnivore's Dilemma: Pontiac Style

In my younger years I tried to be a vegetarian. I was embracing the back-to-the-land dream of self-sufficiency, earth sheltered houses, that sort of thing. I tried cooking my way through the Moosewood Cookbook and indeed there are delicious recipes in there that I still use. But inevitably I would go to my parents’ for dinner.

UPDATE: Entrance to Luskville Falls restricted this spring

The access to the Luskville Falls is currently blocked for renovations to the picnic area, the car park, the climbing trail and the access road itself. According to the sign, these areas are actually closed to the public. However the day I was there, several cars were parked along Ch. Hotel de Ville: I assume the people had walked along the road to the falls regardless. In a related topic, the sound of water on rock right now sounds like a passing train.

*UPDATE: I called the NCC today -- third number lucky! -- and have this update. The rehabilitation of the trail is almost complete and  . . .

Deer Xing

It's spring in the Pontiac and that means mud, maple and deer trying to get across the road at all times of the day and night.

For every amusing anecdote recalling a group of deer standing obediently at a stop sign looking left and right, there is the gory evidence of those who have evidently not checked for oncoming traffic. Hitting a deer is going to ruin your day, and his as well.

Welcome to nowhere, you are here

Someone once described the Pontiac region to me as being 'in the middle of nowhere but close to everything', and that is surprisingly true. I can be driving past the RCMP cars and construction vehicles parked on Parliament Hill in almost 30 minutes from my front gate.

Having both distance from and proximity to not only a major urban centre but the nation's capital is a unique and potentially useful circumstance. Let's take a bit of time to think about how we can get this to work for us.

FPAQ and UPA reaction to the Gagné Report: An unfounded report that will ruin maple syrup producers and destabilize an entire sector

Categories:

Fédération des producteurs acéricoles du Québec (FPAQ) and Union des producteurs agricoles (UPA) sharply criticize the Gagné Report for its lack of seriousness, objectivity, analysis, and economic foundation with regard to the future of Québec maple syrup. "The report's recommendations will lead the maple syrup industry to ruin. Mr. Gagné's goal is not to give the industry a boost, but rather to knock the legs from under it," FPAQ president Serge Beaulieu said today at a big meeting in front of the Québec National Assembly. A group of over 1,000 maple syrup producers braved the bad weather in order to say NO to the Gagné Report and YES to prosperity in their sector through their collective development tools.
